Almaz Press was incorporated as a publishing house in 1996 by Roger Mitchell, an internationally-recognized mineralogist and one of the world authorities on the petrology of kimberlites, carbonatites and alkaline rocks.

The purpose of Almaz Press is to publish high-quality review monographs in the fields of mineralogy, igneous petrology, inorganic chemistry, and crystal chemistry, and to publish fine art digital abstract images derived from geological materials.

To achieve this goal Almaz is committed to the highest standards of photomicrography and digital reproduction of full colour images, coupled with strict scientific editorial control of text and layout.

Two scientific monographs published to date are restricted to areas of research which have significant economic or technological importance and are of interest to persons working in the fields of economic petrology and materials science.

Almaz Press also publishes digital abstract fine art - termed Steinbilder which is derived from geological materials.

These are published as ink-jet images printed on canvas.
